Careers in Taxation


Taxation is a process of imposing financial charge (tax) on the citizens who earn 'taxable' income. Tax collected by the government is used on various government running schemes. Taxation offers a good career opportunity to the students who have a good observation, can play with numbers and have a attention to details.  A career in taxation involves dealing with direct taxes, filing returns, assessment of taxes and providing advice on indirect taxes. Direct tax is the tax collected directly from the people in the way of income tax, property tax, wealth tax etc.; on the other hand  indirect tax is the tax collected from the customers on the goods purchased or for the service provided. For eg : VAT, sales tax, excise duty, customs duty etc.  Many institutes in India are offering courses in this field, to produce competent professionals who can work in the field of taxation.

Course Details
Numerous colleges and universities in India are running courses in the field of taxation, at diploma and certificate levels. To pursue the graduate level courses, the aspirants must have passed 10+2 from any recognized state/national Board. To be eligible for the PG courses, one has to complete graduation in the relevant stream.

Career Prospects
Good number of jobs are available both in private and public sector undertakings for efficient professionals who can deliver good performance in the field of taxation. The aspirants can join any related organizations as Employment Tax Specialists, Tax Accountant, State Local Tax Attorney specialists, Tax Recruiter, Tax Policy Analyst, tax advisor, Tax Manager, Collectors, Revenue Agents, Tax Examiners, etc.

Institutes Offering
Some of the prominent institutions in the area of taxation are Nagpur College of Taxation, Annamalai University, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and Indian Institute of Taxation. Apart from this, commerce colleges have included taxation as an important part of their curriculum.

Remuneration
Remuneration in the field of taxation differ from organization to organization. However, beginners can earn a salary of Rs 15000-Rs40000 per month.
