Careers in Sports Management

The current hype of Indian Premier League (IPL) is catching so many eyeballs towards it. Many youngsters want to join the fun party of IPL directly or indirectly. Directly they can enter as a cricket player, indirectly as supporting person. As supporting person they can join sports management teams, which help in organising the whole sport event.   Today, sports is not just limited to cricket, tennis, or hockey in India, but encloses various other international and domestic sports, such as golf, athletics, football, badminton, archery, shooting, and other games. With ever increasing hype around sports, it become a glamorous field and many people want to work in this new industry.  The excitement, thrill, and passion that sports management includes are comparable to none of the umpteen career options available. But what exactly is sports management? Sports management includes the study of planning, supervising, and organizing different sporting activities. Sports managers are required at recreational sports, college sports, sports marketing, facility management, sports finance, front office system in professional sports, event management, sports economics, and sports information. If you have that passion for sports and love to mingle business with pleasure, pursuing a career in sports management would be perfect.
 
Course Details
As such there is no specific course required to enter sports management, but the increasing popularity of sports has triggered the launch of different courses at various study levels in colleges and universities. Management course are available in sports industry after completion of graduation, such as PGDM. Though a candidate from any stream can take up studies in sports management, but graduates in physical education are preferred.

Career Prospects
All the jobs are not glamorous in sports industry, but many are. To start off with, one can work as a sports and fitness centre, coach in gymnasium, sports club, schools, and colleges. With adequate experience, one can explore various other opportunities in sports management, such as trainer, recruiter athletic director, and scout. Some other available options in sports management include sports information director, compliance director, agent, and sports marketer. Organizations like Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are always in search of professionals with sponsorship leveraging, media planning, evaluation, merchandising, corporate event sponsorship management, finance, and infrastructure management.   

Institutes Offering
The institutes are offering degree, diploma and certificate courses in sports management. Some leading colleges and universities are: Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu; Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science, New Delhi; Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata; Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala; Amity School of Physical Studies and Sports Sciences, Noida; International Institute of Sports Management, Mumbai; and Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, Gwalior.

Remuneration
For a fresh graduates, remuneration ranges from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month. As one gains experience, salaries can shoot up to as high as Rs. 5 to 6 lakhs per annum.
