Careers in Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a division of science which studies the chemistry of living organisms, from the simplest to the most complex, and it seeks to explain how they work at the molecular level. A person who studies biochemistry is known as Biochemists. A biochemists study the elements, compounds and chemical reactions that are controlled by enzymes and take place in these organisms. The study of biochemistry includes structural and functional cellular components such as proteins, nucleic acids, bio-molecules and carbohydrates.
Biochemists have many specializations and almost all the specializations require good research techniques and the ability to combine and analyze information thoroughly.

Some courses offered under Biochemistry: -

  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
  • Master of Science in Biochemistry
  • M.Phil in Biochemistry
  • Ph.D in Biochemistry

 Eligibility

For admission into bachelor’s degree program a student must pass 10+2 in science stream with biology as the subject and minimum of 50% marks from any recognized board. The duration of the program is of 3 years.
For admission into master’s degree program a student must have a bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject. The duration of the program is of 2 years.

Specializations

Few specializations under Biochemistry: -

  • Bioinformatics
  • Cell biology and signalling
  • Development and disease
  • Energy and metabolism
  • Genetics
  • Molecular biology
  • Plant biology

Job Prospects

Biochemists work in industry, agriculture, hospitals, research institutes and education institutions. There are good career opportunities in industry sectors such as food, brewing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and agrochemicals, where biochemical knowledge is needed to develop new products and monitor the production, quality and safety of existing ones.
Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary subject having close links with chemistry, the other biological sciences, agriculture and medicine. Because of this graduates in biochemistry enjoy a wide range of career opportunities.
