Careers in Anthropology

Anthropology deals with the origin of the mankind. Anthropology involves the study of the social, cultural and physical growth and behavior of mankind. Anthropology studies the biological evolution of human being, their social, cultural and linguistic development and also includes archaeological study of human relicts. 

Anthropology can be divided into more specialized branches of study. This division is known as the "four-field" approach to the subject. These four divisions are:
  • Biological Anthropology
  • Archaeology
  • Socio-Cultural Anthropology
  • Linguistic Anthropology

Basic Eligibility


For admission into bachelor’s degree program a student must pass 10+2 in science stream with biology as the subject and minimum of 50% marks from any recognized board. The duration of the program is of 3 years.


For admission into master’s degree program a student must have a bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject. The duration of the program is of 2 years.

The graduates of this course have multiple career options.  Anthropological Survey of India is the major recruiter for anthropologists in the country both at the center and at the state levels as well. Many government research institutes employ anthropologists.

International agencies like UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO recruit anthropologists too carry out research activities. Other sectors where anthropologists get employed are curators, art galleries, publishing houses, NGOs, archives, museums and libraries.

Remuneration: -

A fresher can start his career with a pay package of Rs.8,000 to Rs.12,000 per month. Further growth comes with experience and skill development.
