Careers in Thermal Engineering

Thermal engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with heating and cooling systems, transfer of heat, and fluid mechanics. A thermal engineer is a person who specializes in a complex field of engineering that focuses on thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and fluid mechanics. Thermal Engineers main task involves knowing the source of heat generation and its removal in an electronics system. Thermal engineering can also be practiced by mechanical and chemical engineers. Thermal engineering principles are used in many areas such as the automobile industry; the electric power industry; the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry.

List of available Courses: -
  • Diploma Course in Thermal Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Thermal Engineering
  • Bachelor of Technology in Thermal Engineering
  • Master of Engineering in Thermal Engineering
  • Master of Technology in Thermal Engineering
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Thermal Power Plant Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Thermal Engineering

Eligibility Criteria

For admission in a bachelor’s degree, the candidate must have passed 10+2 examination with science subject such as physics, chemistry and maths. For IITs, It is mandatory to qualify in the Joint Entrance Examinations (IIT-J.E.E).  The duration for this course is 4 years.

The eligibility criteria for master’s degree are holding a bachelor's degree in (B.E/B.Tech) or any other equivalent branches of engineering. The duration for this course is 2 years.

Specializations

Some of the specializations in this fields are: -
  • Heat Transfer and Thermal Power
  • Hydroturbomachines
  • I.C. Engines
  • Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
  • Thermal Turbomachines
  • Thermodynamics & Combustion Engineering

Job Prospects

Many career opportunities are available in this field. Thermal engineers mainly work in the fields like: design of various types of heaters, from air and water line heaters to applications like freeze protection and temperature control; heat-related safety studies; thermal analysis for optimizing use of power; simulations and predictions. This field offers many opportunities to the people who want to pursue a career as a researcher.
There is a good demand of thermal engineers in defense and railways as they require them for   assisting in maintenance and design of their machinery.

Remuneration

The salary for Thermal engineers depends on factors like qualification, institution of study, experience and job profile. The salary packages for a fresher may be around Rs. 15,000 to 20,000. For experienced people, Indian companies offer pay packages in the range of Rs.5-6 Lac p.a. The scope for employment and salary is much better in western countries. PK8BXSMPUHYN
