Dairy
technology is a part of engineering which involves the processing of
milk and its related products. The study of dairy technology deals with
the processing, storage, packaging, distribution and transportation of dairy
products by using the science of bacteriology, nutrition and biochemistry.
Dairy technology also uses principles of physics, biotechnology, economics
engineering, and chemistry in order to develop the suitable utilization of milk
and associated products. The main works under the dairy technology is
reproduction of high yielding cattle’s, taking care of the animals, collecting
of milk, managing the supply of milk and its alteration into dairy products.
The concept of dairy technology was initiated by Anand Milk Union Limited
(AMUL) in 1946, giving the push for imparting education in dairy technology.
The National Dairy Institute in Karnal, Haryana was the initiator in dairy
technology in India and started a course in this field.

Job Prospects
Dairy technology has
a good scope in terms of employment opportunities. At presently there are
around 500 dairy plants in our country and many dairy equipment manufacturers.
Trained professionals from this field can seek employment in government and
private organizations such as manufacturing firms, rural banks, cooperatives,
milk product processing and dairy farms.
Graduates in this
career can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges. Dairy
technologists can start his own business such as ice-cream units, small-scale
milk plants, creamery products processing and or can work as consultants.
Quality control departments also employ dairy technologists. For the people who
want to do research in this area, there are many opportunities.
Remuneration: -
A fresher can start
his career with a salary of around Rs. 10,000 - Rs. 12,000 per month in the
beginning stage. After gaining experience one can earn around 20,000 - 25,000
per month. Graduates are recruited as trainees and shift officers. General
Managers get salary of Rs 20,000 and upwards as experience increases.
