Biotechnology is a
fast growing and promising field. It is an interdisciplinary science, which
includes the study of biology, physics, chemistry, maths and engineering. Biotechnology finds application in
industrial as well as daily life, it also has applications in chemical,
pharmaceutical and textile industries to genetics and agriculture.
Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetic Engineering are its related fields.
Biotechnology is a research oriented science, and there is great demand for biotech
specialist in pharma and biotech instrument manufacturing companies. Biotechnology includes subjects like biology, technology,
Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Virology, Immunology, Engineering,
Health and Medicine, Cropping System and Crop Management, Agriculture and
Animal Husbandry, Ecology, Bio-Statistics, Soil Science and Soil Conservation,
Cell Biology, Seed Technology, and Plant Physiology.
Eligibility Criteria:-
For admission in biotechnology course one should pass 10+2 or equivalent of any
recognized Board or Council with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. 10+2 in
Science (Without Biology) or equivalent can also apply for admission, but in
this case student has to undergo a foundation course in Biology in the first
semester. The course duration is of three years.
For M.Sc. in Biotechnology you should have a graduate
degree in biotechnology. It may be B.Sc. or B.Tech in biotechnology.
Career Scope:-
Biotechnology has a great scope in future. A biotechnology graduate can find
employment opportunities in pharmaceutical companies, chemical, agriculture and
allied industries. There is a great scope for bio-technologist in in research
laboratories run by the government as well as the corporate sector. Trained
graduates can also get job opportunities in government and private teaching and
research institutions. Biotechnology graduate can work with pharma companies as
medical representatives.
Other then this trained graduate can also find opportunities
in plant, animal or microbial biotechnology laboratories or in horticulture,
food scienc. In private companies they can also work as:-
- Business
development manager
- Lab
technician
- Marketing:
In biotechnology marketing
- Research
associate
- Research
scientist Engineer (Chemical, Electrical, Environmental and Industrial)
Remuneration:-
In the corporate and public sector, fresh B.Sc. /B. Tech. graduates may get in
the range of Rs. 12,000 to Rs.15,000 per month. Those working in the research
institutes can expect same income. Remuneration in this field depends on the
institute or university from which you get degree as well as the personal
skills.
