Careers in Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering

This is one of the oldest branch of engineering. Civil Engineering involves use of scientific and engineering principles to design and construct the physical and natural built environment, including the structures viz. roads, bridges, canals, dams and buildings etc.
Civil Engineering is now being studied under several sub-disciplines like geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, structural engineering, water resources engineering, transportation engineering, materials engineering, surveying, urban planning, coastal engineering, and many more.
A civil engineer can choose from many career options like designing, supervision and construction activities of public works like roads, tunnels, bridges, buildings, dams, airports, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. The career prospects in this field are excellent due to the rapid growth of infrastructure facilities in the country.

Eligibility
The basic eligibility criteria is 10+2 (with Physics, Chemistry and Maths). There are many BE/BTech program in Civil Engineering of four years duration. The selection is generally made on the basis of entrance tests (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.) conducted at both national and state level.
An career in civil engineering can be started after class 10th. A high school passed is only eligible to pursue Diploma program in civil engineering. After successful completion of the course, he can join as a junior engineer in various public and private sector jobs.
One can also continue his study further by joining ME/MTech programs offered by various engineering colleges/universities including the IITs and NITs.

Career Prospects
Great job opportunities are available in in civil engineering both in public and private sectors. The government departments like irrigation, public health or public works offer ample job opportunities to civil engineering graduates. However, the probability of finding jobs in private sector is more as compared to government sector. A fresh graduate of civil engineering one can also look for jobs in building work, road projects, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories and housing societies.
There is a great demand of civil engineers in developed and developing countries. Hundreds of civil engineers migrate from India to Australia, Canada and other countries for better career prospects.

Institutes/Universities
BE/BTech course in Civil engineering is offered by almost all engineering colleges/technological universities including the IITs and NITs. Most of the state universities and private B.tech colleges offer civil engineering branch.

Careers in Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is an engineering science which involves the application of physical science (e.g. chemistry and physics), with mathematics, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful forms.
Chemical engineers try to find the best possible way to manufacture products. A chemical engineer translates processes developed in the lab into practical applications for the production of products such as medicines, detergents, plastics, and fuels; design plants to maximize productivity and minimize costs.

Eligibility
The basic eligibility criteria is 10+2 Sc (with Physics, Chemistry and Maths). There are many BE/BTech program in chemical engineering of four years duration. Admission to B.Tech program is made generally through entrance tests.
One can also do Diploma in Chemical engineering which is of three years duration and it gives the status of a junior engineer. The candidate can join this course after completing class X.

Career Prospects
A chemical engineer can find jobs in areas like food, materials, specialty chemicals, plastics, power production, environmental control, waste management and biotechnology etc.
Ample employment opportunities available for chemical engineers both in the public sector as well as the private sector. They can get jobs in areas such as processing, operations or research and development, manufacturing, design and construction, finance and also in teaching.

Careers in Ceramic Technology

Ceramic Technology deals with the study of the properties, design, manufacture, and applications of ceramic materials. The ceramic designers are concerned with designing various types of ceramic wares used in industries, institutions, households, corporate houses and other places. Ceramic products include table and kitchenware, decorative ware like insulators, flower vase, potters, building materials like tiles, etc. Cement too is considered as one of the ceramic materials.
The study ceramic technology consists of planning and developing processing systems, designing and construction of plants and machinery along with other engineers, research and development of the ceramic materials,  planning and implementation of processing methodologies, designs and development of various applications like glass, porcelain, cement, composite materials, refractors, insulators, enamels, cement etc.

Eligibility
The basic eligibility criteria is 10+2 (with Physics, Chemistry and Maths). Various engineering colleges offers BE, B.Tech in ceramics of four years duration. The admissions are done through a written test.

Job opportunities
There are great opportunities particularly in private sector. In private sector, a person with a degree in Ceramic Technology can be absorbed in various ceramic ware manufacturing units located at various locations of the country. Generally, two types of workers are employed in this industry – ceramic technologists and ceramic designers. The ceramic technologists use the materials produced by complex chemical processes while the ceramic designers use sand and clay for basic ceramic materials. One can also start his/her own business and become an entrepreneur.
